Erg Chebbi

Merzouga Desert Tours

Every route we operate that reaches the dunes of Erg Chebbi — from a three-day escape to a full circuit of the country.

Merzouga sits at the foot of Erg Chebbi, the tall, orange dune field that most travellers picture when they think of the Moroccan Sahara.

Getting there is a journey in itself. From Marrakech the road climbs the Tizi n'Tichka pass and runs through Ouarzazate, Skoura, the Dades valley and the Todra gorges. From Fes it drops through Ifrane, Midelt and the Ziz valley. Both arrive at the same place: a village where the tarmac stops and the sand begins.

These 23 tours all include a night at the dunes.

Frequently asked

Where is Merzouga?

Merzouga is a village in south-eastern Morocco, on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. It is roughly a two-day drive from Marrakech and a long day from Fes, which is why desert tours are built as multi-day routes.

What is the difference between Merzouga and Erg Chebbi?

Erg Chebbi is the dune field; Merzouga is the village beside it where the tours arrive and where the camps are reached from.

How do we get into the dunes?

By camel or by 4x4, depending on the tour and on what you prefer. Each tour page lists the transfer included.
