The Sahara

Sahara Desert Tours in Morocco

The part of the trip travellers remember: the light on the dunes at the end of the day, dinner at the camp and a sky with nothing in the way of it.

Morocco's Sahara is reached by road, and the road is half the experience.

From Marrakech you cross the High Atlas and follow the old kasbah route south. From Fes you come down through the cedar forests and the Ziz valley. Either way, the last stretch opens onto sand, and you leave the vehicle behind to enter the dunes.

We operate these journeys ourselves. The camps, the transfers into the dunes and the guided stops along the way are listed on each tour page, so you know exactly what your Sahara night includes before you commit to anything.

On a Sahara route you can expect

  • — A crossing of the High Atlas or the Middle Atlas, depending on where you start
  • — Kasbahs, gorges and palm oases on the way south
  • — A camel ride or 4x4 transfer into the dunes, as listed on your tour
  • — Dinner and a night at a desert camp
  • — Sunrise over the dunes before the road back

Tours that include a Sahara night

Frequently asked

When is the best time for a Sahara tour?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, with warm days and cool nights. Summer days in the desert are very hot, and winter nights are cold — both are still travelled, with the right clothing.

What is a night in the desert like?

You reach the camp in the late afternoon, by camel or 4x4 depending on the tour, watch the sunset from the dunes, and have dinner at the camp. Berber music around a fire and a very dark, very quiet night sky are part of it.

Can I combine the Sahara with the imperial cities?

Yes. Our longer circuits from Marrakech, Fes, Casablanca and Tangier include both the desert and the imperial cities.
