What to Expect on an Overnight Sahara Desert Camp in Morocco

A night in the dunes is the moment most travelers remember. Knowing what to expect makes it easier to enjoy.

You arrive at the edge of the dunes in the late afternoon, ride or walk into the sand as the light turns gold, and reach a cluster of tents tucked between the dunes. That is the essence of a Sahara camp night — but the details vary a lot from one camp to another.

Types of desert camp

Camps range from simple tents with shared facilities to comfortable tents with proper beds, electricity and private bathrooms. The level depends on the tour and the accommodation category you choose; the specific camp for each itinerary is shown on the tour page.

Dinner and breakfast

Dinner is usually served in the camp, often a soup followed by a tagine and fruit, with mint tea. Breakfast follows in the morning before you leave the dunes. Tell us about dietary needs in advance so the camp can prepare.

Evenings and mornings

  • Sunset on the dunes on arrival
  • Dinner and, in many camps, music around the fire
  • Stargazing — the sky away from cities is spectacular
  • An early start to watch the sunrise

Temperatures

The desert cools quickly after sunset. Nights can be cold in winter and fresh even in spring and autumn, while summer days are very hot. Plan for both extremes.

What to pack for one night

  • A small overnight bag (main luggage usually stays in the vehicle)
  • A warm layer or fleece for the evening
  • Sunglasses, sunscreen and a scarf against sun and sand
  • Comfortable shoes you don't mind filling with sand
  • A head torch or phone light
  • Any personal medication
