What to wear in Morocco in October
October is arguably the best month to travel in Morocco: the summer heat has broken, the light is golden and the desert is comfortable again. The catch is the temperature swing — up to 20 °C between a Marrakech afternoon and a Sahara night.

October weather, region by region
Morocco is not one climate. In the same week you can have beach weather in Essaouira, T-shirt afternoons in Marrakech, cold mornings in the High Atlas and a Sahara night that needs a fleece. Plan for the coldest place on your route, not the average.
| Region | Typical day | Typical night | What that means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech & imperial cities | 26–30 °C | 13–16 °C | Light layers, one warm layer for evenings |
| Sahara (Merzouga, Zagora) | 28–32 °C | 10–14 °C | Sun cover by day, fleece and hat at night |
| High Atlas (Imlil, Toubkal) | 15–20 °C | 3–8 °C | Proper jacket, warm socks, hiking shoes |
| Atlantic coast (Essaouira, Agadir) | 22–25 °C | 15–17 °C | Windbreaker, the trade wind is constant |
| Chefchaouen & the Rif | 20–24 °C | 10–13 °C | Rain is possible late in the month |
The layering rule that works everywhere
Three thin layers beat one thick one. A breathable base layer, a long-sleeved shirt or light knit, and a windproof outer layer will carry you from a rooftop breakfast to a camel ride at sunset without repacking. Natural fibres — cotton and linen by day, merino at night — handle the dust and the swing better than heavy synthetics.
Desert night reality check
Camp temperatures at Erg Chebbi can drop to 10 °C once the sun goes down, and there is no heating in a nomad tent. Bring one warm layer you would happily sleep in. Blankets are provided, but nobody regrets the fleece.
Dressing respectfully — and comfortably
Morocco is relaxed with visitors, and there is no dress code for tourists. That said, covering shoulders and knees in medinas, souks and villages simply makes the day easier: fewer stares, warmer welcomes, better photographs. Resort areas, riad rooftops and the coast are far more casual.
For women
- Loose trousers, wide-leg linen or a midi skirt — cooler than shorts in the sun anyway
- T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts; a light cardigan for evenings
- A large scarf: sun cover, dust protection, and mosque-courtyard modesty in one
- One nicer outfit for a riad dinner or a rooftop in Marrakech
For men
- Chinos or light trousers; shorts are fine in the coast and resorts, less so deep in a medina
- Two or three breathable shirts, one long-sleeved for the desert sun
- A light jacket or fleece for Atlas mornings and Sahara nights
Shoes matter more than anything else
Medina alleys are uneven, dusty and occasionally wet from the tanneries or a fruit stall. Bring closed, broken-in walking shoes for cities, sandals for the riad and the coast, and — if your itinerary includes the Atlas — trail shoes with grip. Sand gets into everything, so leave the white sneakers at home.
October packing checklist
- Sunglasses, high-SPF sunscreen and a brimmed hat or scarf
- One warm mid-layer (fleece or merino) for the desert and Atlas
- Windproof light jacket, packable
- Comfortable closed walking shoes + sandals
- Reusable water bottle (filtered bottles save a lot of plastic)
- Universal adapter — Morocco uses European two-pin type C/E, 220 V
- Small daypack for desert and hiking days
- Basic pharmacy: rehydration salts, painkillers, plasters, motion-sickness tablets for mountain roads
- Cash in small dirham notes for tips, hammams and rural stops
- Modest layer for visiting religious sites and rural villages
The travellers who enjoy October most are the ones who packed one extra warm layer and one fewer pair of shoes.
What you can leave behind
- Heavy coats — even Atlas nights rarely need more than a fleece and a shell
- Hair dryer and towels: every riad we work with provides them
- A full week of outfits — laundry is cheap and fast almost everywhere
- Drone equipment, unless you have arranged permission in advance; import rules are strict
