Sahara Desert Tours from Marrakech: The Complete Guide
A Sahara desert tour from Marrakech is the trip most first-time travelers dream about — and the one most often planned badly. Here is how to choose the right length, route and camp.

The great sand seas of Morocco lie on the far side of the High Atlas from Marrakech. Reaching them is part of the experience: mountain passes, kasbah villages, palm oases and gorges come before the first dune. That distance is also why the choice of tour matters so much.
Where exactly is the Sahara from Marrakech?
Most desert tours from Marrakech head to one of two dune fields. Erg Chebbi, beside the village of Merzouga, has the tallest, most photographed dunes and the widest choice of camps. Erg Chigaga, beyond M'Hamid, is more remote and wilder, reached by 4x4 across open desert. Both are a long drive from Marrakech, so neither is realistic as a same-day return.
Avoid the one-day “desert” trip
Day trips sold as “Sahara” from Marrakech usually visit the Agafay stony desert or Ouarzazate — beautiful, but not the sand dunes. For real dunes, plan at least three days.
How many days do you need?
3 days: the essentials
A 3-day Merzouga tour crosses the Atlas, stops at Aït Ben Haddou and the Dades or Todra area, and gives you one night in the dunes. The driving days are long, but it works if time is short.
4 days: the comfortable choice
A fourth day breaks up the driving and leaves more time for the gorges, villages and sunset on the dunes. For most travellers this is the best balance.
5 days or more: slower and deeper
Longer routes add extra nights along the way, a broader loop of the south, or more time in the desert itself. Ideal for photographers, families and anyone who dislikes long days in the car.
Return to Marrakech or finish in Fes?
You don't have to drive back the way you came. Many travellers continue from Merzouga north through the Middle Atlas and finish in Fes, turning the desert into a link between Morocco's two great imperial cities. Read our comparison of the 3 and 4-day routes to Fes if you're weighing that option.
What happens in the desert
- A camel ride into the dunes, usually timed for sunset
- Dinner and an overnight stay in a desert camp
- Sunrise over the dunes the next morning
- Optional extras on some routes, such as 4x4, quad or buggy rides — always check what your tour includes
Camps range from simple shared tents to private tents with en-suite bathrooms. Which one you get depends on the tour and accommodation level you book, so ask before you confirm.
How to choose the right tour
- Private or shared: a private tour sets its own pace and stops
- Number of nights in the desert and en route
- Camp type and whether bathrooms are private
- Where the tour ends — Marrakech, Fes or elsewhere
- What is included: meals, camel ride, guided visits

FAQ
Can I visit the Sahara as a day trip from Marrakech?
Not the sand dunes of Merzouga or Erg Chigaga. They are too far for a day return; allow at least three days.
Merzouga or Erg Chigaga?
Merzouga is easier to reach and has the highest dunes and most camp options. Erg Chigaga feels more remote and suits travellers who want an off-road adventure.
When is the best time to go?
Spring and autumn are the most comfortable. Summer days are very hot and winter nights are cold, though the desert is visited all year.
