Marrakech to Fes via the Sahara: 3 Days or 4 Days?

The Marrakech to Fes desert tour is one of Morocco's classic journeys. The real question is whether to do it in three days or four.

Travelling from Marrakech to Fes through the Sahara turns a transfer between cities into the highlight of a trip. You cross the High Atlas, follow the valleys of the south, spend a night in the dunes of Erg Chebbi and climb through the Middle Atlas to Fes.

What both routes share

  • Departure from Marrakech and arrival in Fes
  • The crossing of the High Atlas
  • A night in a desert camp at Merzouga
  • A camel ride into the dunes
  • A private driver throughout

The 3-day route

Three days is the compact version. It covers the key sights, but the days on the road are long and stops are kept short. It works best for travellers with a tight schedule who are comfortable spending much of the day in the car.

The 4-day route

The extra day spreads the journey out. You get more time at the stops along the way, an easier arrival in the desert and less pressure on each day. It is the better choice for families, older travellers and anyone who wants to enjoy the scenery rather than watch it pass by.
